Born in 1941, Juban took his college education (although he never finished it due to the painting commissions) at the University of Santo Tomas, where he was an art scholar. But even before pursuing higher education, Juban learned the rudiments of art through tracing komiks characters and taking lessons on drawing and painting under maestro Botong. During his schooling years in Angono, Juban would frequent Botong’s studio, eventually assisting the latter in his works and becoming his trusted apprentice until Botong’s untimely death in 1969.

Juban’s most memorable project—and one of his last—with Botong was the monumental “Filipino Struggles Throughout History,” commissioned by then Manila mayor Antonio Villegas in 1968 and finished by Botong months before his passing on March 31, 1969. A declared National Cultural Treasure, the mural was originally installed at the Manila City Hall’s Bulwagang Katipunan until its transfer to the National Museum of Fine Arts in 2018 for greater public appreciation.

According to the CCP Encyclopedia of Philippine Art, Juban’s subjects are similar to his mentor’s, but his treatment shows the employment of bolder lines and a more spontaneous approach. Juban was also an assistant to another national artist, Vicente Manansala, for his iconic murals “Inang Bayan” (1975, Philippine Heart Center, Quezon City) and “The Coconut Industry” (1979, United Coconut Planters Bank (UCPB) Headquarters, Makati City).

Juban was commissioned to paint the murals “Pag-Asa” (1972) for the Philippine Orthopedic Center, Anazibu and Batangan for the Batulao Clubhouse in Batangas, “History of Meralco” for the Lopez Family’s Meralco Building, and “Nymphs” for the Colonnade Building in Makati. Juban was elected president of the Angono Artists Association in 1985 and was vice president of the Art Association of the Philippines (AAP) in 1992. He received the second prize and an honorable mention at the 1969 and 1971 Shell National Students Art Competition, respectively, and an honorable mention at the 1971 YMCA Art Competition.
