On that day, he had a painting session with the Saturday Group of Artists. Upon leaving the farm, Olazo brought an armful of anthuriums and gifted it to his wife, Patricia.<br /><br />This romantic incident paved the way for a new theme in the art of Olazo. Cid Reyes wrote in the book Romulo Olazo, “It was as if the flower farm had intuited Olazo’s attraction for anthuriums.” It is no wonder that the artist developed a personal affinity for the anthurium, as it has come to symbolize benevolence and hospitality because of its open flowers. With its expressive contours, Olazo saw the anthurium in its most poetic and evocative form. The art critic added, “These anthurium paintings are the progeny of that felicitous moment.”<br />At first, Olazo’s anthurium paintings were rendered as realistic floral still lifes. Later, he would visually translate them into his iconic Diaphanous approach, flattened but still retaining their distinct heart shape. Thereafter, Olazo’s iconic anthuriums finally come into full bloom.
