Born in Manila and raised in Zamboanga, Go has been naturally inclined to the sublime world of the arts since his youth. In school, colorful drawings and sketches overtook his young mind, replacing the traditional lecture notes that he deemed “boring.”
In the elegant spectacle of dancing, Go’s name has been synonymous with Argentine tango. He visited Argentina and became thoroughly immersed in its culture, heritage, and history, spending years of training to perfect his craft and hone his passion for tango. For him, dancing is akin to walking, accompanied only by rhythm and melody.
The pinnacle of Go’s dancing career would have been his 2016 participation at the prestigious “World Tango Dance Tournament” (Campeonato Mundial de Baile de Tango or simply, Mundial de Tango), an annual competition of Argentine tango held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as part of the Buenos Aires Tango Festival organized by the city government. More than a thousand dance couples participate in the annual competition. They are slowly eliminated until the announcement of the ultimate winner. Go and his professional dance partner, Edna Ledesma, had spent a whole year practicing and refining their dance routine; that year was supposed to be their first time participating in the competition. However, the night before their departure for Buenos Aires, Go accidentally fell on a wet marble floor, injuring his knee and making him incapable of participating in the contest. Physical, mental, and emotional pain confounded and shattered Go’s dreams (and career, as he thought). As a result, Ledesma had to look for another partner and left as scheduled for Buenos Aires.
These works, Shattered Dreams 1 and 2, became conduits for Go to translate his suffering and disappointment into creative catharsis, an emotional and mental purification of all sorts. Years have passed, and Go has become more optimistic and determined, letting himself grow around his grief and augment it into a flourishing and dynamic ingenuity, like a spirited dancer gracefully yet nobly rising from a fall.
