Francisco and Lucio San Pedro, National Artists for the Visual Arts and Music, respectively. Guilaran’s artistic praxis revolves around weaving personal memories, experiences, and collective narratives, resulting in an oeuvre with a multi-faceted approach to critiquing society. Winnowing was a part of Guilaran’s second solo exhibition titled “Galos,” in which he deconstructed and constructed narratives concerning his native Angono, interspersing them with personal recollections. In Winnowing, Guilaran appropriates one of Fernando Amorsolo’s most popular and iconic subjects: Winnowing Rice. In this work, one can see “scratches” on the canvas. Although these “scratches” are not concrete, Guilaran’s method of deliberately “destroying” the canvas is intended to reveal how he sees the process of destruction as a way towards eventual rebirth, a return to one’s native roots. In Angono, a town steeped in history, culture, and heritage, Guilaran witnessed how modernization has displaced longstanding traditions. For him, the disappearance of traditions meant losing his roots and personal identity, which shaped him into the artist he is today. By using Amorsolo’s works, the embodiment of the idyllic tradition of the Philippine countryside, Guilaran harks back to and evokes nostalgia for simpler, less complicated times. “Destroying” the canvas is Guilaran’s manner of “opening a window” into the past in the hopes that it could penetrate again into the collective consciousness of his fellow folks in Angono. This process is also Guilaran’s way of revealing the harmony and chaos inherent between tradition and modernity. Guilaran asks: how much of tradition should we abandon to achieve advancement and progress, and how much of modernity should we let in without sacrificing the character and authenticity of one’s culture and heritage? Siefred Guilaran graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Major in Advertising, from the University of Rizal System – Angono. He was a consistent finalist in the Metrobank Art and Design Excellence (MADE) Competition in 2012, 2013, and 2014. Guilaran was honored in 2016 by the same award-giving body with a special citation for his work “Corrupted.” Guilaran had his solo presentation at the 2019 KIAF Art Seoul in South Korea, represented by Art Underground Manila.
