During that time, Angel was in his last year as a Fine Arts student at the University of the Philippines; he would eventually earn his Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) the following year.

Michael Cacnio captures in this collaboration a reenactment of his father’s creative process. Angel is seen sitting on the floor, seemingly putting the finishing touches on his winning masterpiece, a reimagination of his landmark work. As the foremost champion of the folk genre during the latter half of the 20th century, cockfighting, or sabong in the Filipino lexicon, is a recurring theme in Angel’s works. He depicts in this joint effort a snapshot of sabungeros about to engage in the rowdy yet popular and culturally iconic Filipino pastime. One can even notice the man on the left kneading his kumpare’s back, a cordial sign of hyping a comrade’s spirit up.

Overall, Angel and Michael Cacnio demonstrate their nurturing father and son relationship grounded in the arts and bonded by the same affinity for celebrating one’s culture and heritage.
