A distinguished fine arts graduate of the University of the Philippines Diliman, Cacnio’s penchant for the folk genre and iconic local tableaux of Filipino everyday living has been evident even in his early years as a sculptor, as evidently seen in this 1998 work that forms part of the artist’s early oeuvre.

In this evocative work, Cacnio depicts the carabao cart (karitela), which is similar to the kalesa (horse-drawn carriage), except that it is loaded with various local goods for sale. It is a ubiquitous scene, especially in the provinces. A man can be seen helming the carabao; he is almost dwarfed by the sheer amount of his merchandise, which includes woven baskets, rattan folding chairs, and locally produced brooms (walis tambo). Bordering on the social realist style, Cacnio’s employment of brass, one of the most durable metals, exhibits his celebration of the resiliency and ingenuity of the ordinary Filipino. Yet, through his deliberate employment of blank facial expressions in his human subjects, Cacnio subtly comments on the current state of the Filipino masses: neglected, exploited, and oppressed. But amid their seemingly unrecognizable faces, Cacnio establishes familiarity in anonymity—that we have more in common with the masses than we ever think and perceive: a shared struggle towards inclusive progress.

Michael Cacnio is a 2006 recipient of The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) award, a national recognition given to Filipinos between the ages of 18 and 40 who have made impactful contributions to their respective fields.
