His passion for sculpture followed him throughout adulthood, even when he pursued a degree in Philosophy at the University of the Philippines.

For quite a while, dela Cruz worked as a product designer in the handicraft export industry until his 40th birthday, when his path took a turn to the art world. “Forty seemed to mark bucket-list time,” he recalled, “I suppose it inspired me to think big and do something special.”

The Filipino artist’s creativity and deepened commitment to his craft, combined with his education and professional experience, led him to produce sculptures of graceful and powerful figures, ultimately becoming his signature style.

Owing to his proficient training as a product designer and fascination with the creative possibilities of metals, dela Cruz was able to come up with a completely new technique for hand-carving and handforming metal sculptures. This innovation helped him land his very first exhibition at The Ayala Museum in 2007.

“Some of the workers have been with me since my early years at that export company. We started together; now, we’re growing old together,” dela Cruz reflected. The lot at hand is actually one of his early works – Pananaig, made of mixed metals and dated 2008, was finished just one year into his artistic career. In December of the same year, the sculptor received a Gold medal at the “Festival of Nativities.” This annual exposition held in Rome, Italy features Nativity sculptures and designs from five continents, all competing for the coveted prize.

Dela Cruz’s crowning achievement to date is the installation of the country’s largest Crucifix. Towering at a height of 7 meters, it was unveiled in 2016 at the St. Michael the Archangel Parish Church in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.
