BenCab is no exception. The National Artist for Visual Arts puts his observation and interaction to the human form on paper. When doing a nude art he likes to put on the identity of his model but most of them don’t include the face. Of course, the connection between the artist and the model doesn’t happen by itself; it is born of a rapport and trust built over time but the National Artist for Visual Arts prefers to work with amateur models - real women for whom to act of disrobing for the artist is still a revelation invested with deep and metaphoric meaning - that evidently results to a more faithful representation of the individual, not depersonalized or abstracted.

One of the six galleries in the BenCab Museum is dedicated to erotica. In an interview with Inquirer Lifestyle, Cabrera recounted that he likes drawing nudes from life, and that he has an endless fascination with the female body. He told Inquirer that he grew up among women as he was the youngest with one older brother, the Mabini artist Salvador Cabrera, then six sisters. And in his solo exhibit at Bluewater Gallery in Cebu, he said that, “The human figure, especially that of a woman, is always an interesting form to render (into an artwork).” The artist exclaims that he just loves women, especially strong women, formidable with strong personalities.

He gives his nude subjects the subtle power to ignore and rebuke to nullify the gaze, for instance, in the depiction of indulgence. The models, actually, don’t look back - lost in the moment of undressing, rest or auto-pleasure - a theatrical performance in action and nude art in the making. This makes his interest in figures never fade since there’s always a character, a different perspective for him, a new artwork to create.

No wonder, the nude art signed and dated in 1978 (lot 110) by Benedicto Cabrera that had been created using Cretacolor Cleos graphite pencils perfectly captured the image of a woman that is strong yet feminine on her own.","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":null,"alias":"bencab","hp":200000,"bp":0.168,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":200000,"userBid":6033,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":233600,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":54913,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/20/35/lot/109.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[220000,240000,260000,280000,300000,320000,340000,360000,380000,400000,450000,500000,550000,600000,650000,700000,750000,800000,900000,1000000,1100000,1200000,1300000,1400000,1500000,1600000,1700000,1800000,1900000,2000000,2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":108,"next":110,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
