Although he never underwent any formal education in the arts, Aguinaldo passionately developed an experimental style, acquiring influences from the artists he admired such as Jackson Pollock, Rembrandt, and Mark Rothko. His clear-cut artistry was shaped by techniques and approaches that veered from traditional art standards. <br /><br />Aside from being a highly acclaimed abstractionist, Lee Aguinaldo also became prominent in his figurative works. He was a quintessential innovator, becoming one of the artists who spearheaded the adoption of the ideas of Pop Art through incorporating printed images from fashion magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar into his paintings. He took inspiration from his latest copies of art magazines and explored various processes. Frottage (surface rubbings), pencil, image transfers, collages, and acrylic synthesis were incorporated into his mixed-media works. In these works, Aguinaldo employed his sophisticated medium called frottage, a visual art form wherein a pencil, pen, or other graphic media is stroked over an uneven surface to generate various designs.
