A native of Ilocos Sur,\nVitalis sought to fuel his passion for the arts by\nbroadening his horizons on the world stage. He left the\ncountry for San Francisco in 1917 wher e he studied art\nwhile supporting himself with a number of odd jobs. In\n1926, he left the USA and set his sights on the exciting art\nscene of Europe. He settled in France wher e he absorbed\nthe hustle and bustle of Puteaux, a suburb located within\nthe heart of Paris. V italis was able to mingle with Pablo\nPicasso and a number of other r evered French artists. He\neventually adopted the then-eclectic style of Cubism that\nportrayed the mood and ambiance of Eur ope’s pre-war arts \nand culture scene. This disposition heavily informed his\nearlier works which featured palpable\nand dynamic colors, shapes, and forms.<br /><br />\nAfter World War II he found himself in France’s north\nwesternmost region, Brittany. Surrounded by the region’s\nrugged yet scenic coastline, V italis began experimenting\nwith a wholly novel style, one that sought to test the limits\nof French Post-Impressionism while maintaining a sense of\nrenewed vigor.
