A native of Batanes, Abad initially thought of pursuing\na career in politics. This goal of her’s eventually came to a\nstandstill after her family was forced to flee the country due\nto a number of reasons. It was abroad, namely in the United\nStates of America, that Abad found her passion for the arts.\nIn 1971, she studied painting at the Corocan School of Art in\nWashington DC, an experience she supplemented with further\nstudies at New York’s Arts Students League. <br /><br />\nInitially animated by both her personal experiences and the\nshifting intellectual landscape of the 70s and 80s, Abad’s\nearlier works contained imaginative pastiches of Filipino precolonial\nand colonial aesthetics inflected with an unmistakable\npostmodern flair. After her constant sojourns around the\nworld, Abad’s practice eventually evolved to accommodate the\nvivacity of her palette. Rich swathes of colors and spirited swirls\nof paint and other materials fill Abad’s bountiful and engaging\nartistic cosmos. Abad’s 1990 oil on canvas piece titled Confetti\ncontains all the hallmarks of Abad’s abstract imagery. From\nher use of a solid and earthy palette, to ethnic and indigenous\ninspired shapes and patterns, Confetti reimagines traditional\nvisual cues for the modern aesthetic landscape.
