In 1954, he obtained his\nBachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Santo\nTomas. He was bestowed by the Cultural Center of the\nPhilippines with its highly-coveted Thirteen Artists Award\nin 1970. In the same year, Austria held his first exhibition\nat Marcel’s Gallery of Fine Arts in Oakland, Califor nia. A\nhigh point in his artistic career was his nomination as one\nof the five finalists in the 1983 Mobil Art Awards.<br /><br />\nAustria has a penchant for depicting the rich cultural\ntradition of his countrymen – scenes of the common\nFilipinos’ everyday life, the tranquil landscape of the\ncountryside and its peasant folk, and the diverse\ncustoms that define our collective identity as a nation. <br /><br />\nHis works are deeply admired for their captivating and\nidyllic attributes. In this untitled piece, Austria portrays\na utopian domain and a mesmerizing femininity. Set\nagainst a backdrop of a blissful environment, the subjects\nare idealized depictions of Filipino women, dressed in\ntraditional folk wardrobe with their heads covered by\nnative bandanas, and surrounded by an abundance of\nflora and fauna rendered in a polychromatic manner.<br /><br />\nReferring to the universality and pertinent character of\nhis oeuvre, Austria expressed: “I think my work reflects\na number of basic truths, perhaps, too, nostalgia for the\ngood things slipping away. Then there is the earth, the\nfields, the sky, the quiet corner people long for.
