Igarta was the first Filipino to participate\nin an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art with his “Northern\nPhilippines.” He had also showcased his art at the Pennsylvania Academy\nof the Fine Arts (PAFA), the Des Moines Art Center in Iowa, the Dayton\nArt Institute in Ohio, and the Artisans’ Gallery in New York. His work\n“Freedom!” from his United Nations Series (1945) is in the private collection\nof the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.<br /><br />\nIgarta’s style evolved throughout his career: from oil paintings of Ilocos\nbeaches to watercolor impressions of abstract geometrical figures, from\nrealism to surrealism and neo-expressionism, and from seascapes to cubism.\nAfter leaving the Art Students League, he experimented to achieve the\ncolor mastery of old master painters, leading him to unleash his virtuosity in\npigment and hues. His stint at the Color Aid company in New York as a color\nmixer resulted in what he called “the thinking eye.” At Color Aid, Igarta\nspent three decades studying and exploring color relationships, durability,\ndepth, and alteration.
