A renowned author,\nbusinesswoman, and painter, Erlinda first took on the role of\nan entrepreneur, a stint she maintained for decades. After\nretiring, she took up a Master’s Degree in Creative Writing at\nthe University of the Philippines-Diliman. She then published her\ndebut titled Teacher to Tycoon--the Life and Times of Trinidad\nDiaz Enriquez to critical acclaim. As an artist, Panlilio has\nmanaged to exhibit her works in three group shows, and four\nsolo shows.<br /><br />\nThe works of Erlinda Panlilio manage to conjure up both\nmystery and memory. Distinct in its execution albeit vaguely\nfamiliar, Panlilio’s works tap into a number of visual cues that are\ninherently present within a number of our shared experiences as\nhuman beings. In her 2010 oil on canvas work titled Abstract,\nPanlilio presents us with an unassuming yet alluring wooden\ndoor amidst a sea of red, black, and beige elements. Cloaked\nin a peculiar predominantly scarlet aura, Panlilio’s door, which\nin-itself presupposes the existence of a path or space behind it,\n manages to evoke a sense of mystery born out of the colloquial\nconnotations of her chosen subject-matter. Yet, the physicality\nof the canvas as a two-dimensional medium subverts her figure’s\ncriteria, effectively presenting us with a juxtaposition in which\nwhat is often opened will forever remain closed.<br /><br />\nOn the other hand, her 2018 piece titled Lighthouse, manages\nto evoke the opposite effect. Opposed to the former piece’s\nmystery and secrecy, this oil on canvas piece is free from any\nobscure or hidden implications. Panlilio’s chosen subject-matter\nis easily recognizable and visually direct. Her scene, consisting\nof a single lighthouse over a cerulean sea and blanketed by a\ngroup of dark and heavy clouds, is visually frank yet endearing\nnonetheless.
