The young Legaspi had\nnot even finished his commercial art course at the University\nof the Philippines yet he was approached by a UP alumnus\nwho was leaving the company. He asked the budding artist\nif he wanted to take his place, and Legaspi readily agreed.\nDuring his stint at Elizalde and Co., Legaspi primarily worked\nwith pen and ink. As the sole pen-and-ink illustrator and\ncommercial artist of Elizalde and Co., Legaspi’s colorblindness\ndid not hinder him from producing distinct designs, as all\nprint ads were rendered in black and white. It was also during\nthis time that he developed his penchant for the medium,\nas evident in these 15 works from the artist’s estate. In Nick\nJoaquin’s preface in the book Legaspi Drawings, Legaspi said,\n“I love to draw. Everywhere I went, if I\nliked the view, I’d pull out [a] ballpen\nand sketchbook and draw, but as\ninconspicuous as possible. Drawing\nrequires precision – but you shouldn’t\nput down what you see only.
