She worked as an artist for Philprom, an advertising agency, for more than a decade. In 1988, she left the field of advertising and ventured into entrepreneurship as co-owner of Lightmoves Photo/Design, Inc., becoming its art consultant. When the company experienced stability, she returned to painting, becoming a core member of Mauro Malang Santos’ Saturday Group. It was during this time when Velasco fully devoted herself to exploring her distinct artistry and style. <br /><br />Undoubtedly her favorite subject matter, Velasco’s oeuvre revolves around women and their intrinsic strength, liberating them from the shackles of a male-dominated society, at least on her canvases. Despite this, she still manages to unveil the innate femininity of Filipino women, as showcased in this piece titled Ladies at the Flower Garden II. The three women are portrayed as imbued with sultriness juxtaposed with the traditional attributes of Filipino women i.e. their innocence and natural charisma. The preponderance of green gives a revitalized facet for Velasco’s women – inherently powerful yet overflowing with allure and refinement.
