Belonging to the second generation of Modernists, his student years at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) were marked by a period of great inspiration, the greatest of which was his professor and mentor, Vicente Manansala.

Like Manansala, Antonio’s works circle the Filipino way of life, done with a strong Cubist hand. Portraits of Mother and Child, sabungeros, street vendors, fiestas, and the like permeate his oeuvre, these themes offering a peek into the exuberant life of the everyday Filipino.

However, his works hold a stark contrast to his mentor’s in that they are more “aggressive\" and “expressionist.” Art critic Jolico Cuadro writes in 1968: “He explodes them, rendering them in brisk, impatient strokes that shatter their natural boundaries. They are no longer simply decorative …[but are] now fiercely emotional symbols. The harshness of brush strokes and colors is an expressionist explosions of form.”

This particular Filipino brand of Antonio shines through even in his still-life pieces. He casts an observant eye onto what other people consider “common” and creates a sumptuous feast for the eyes. Fruit and vegetables, flowers in vases, and several other paraphernalia are done in Antonio’s trademark of sharper, more angular renditions of these items. He creates crisper and harsher tensions that immediately set Antonio’s works apart.

This particular work portrays a self-contained still life in each quadrant of the canvas. Depictions of fish and fruits, woven handicrafts, and tied wooden works are stacked together in a manner reminiscent of a marketplace layout, wherein one can take a quick and easy perusal of the available goods at hand. Combined with his more adventurous and daring sense of colorism, Antonio’s works are brusque and bristling, with an urgency that belies the otherwise unmanned canvas.

The commonplace, for Antonio, is no mere resting ground for the hustle and bustle of human drama — it is, by itself, a fruitful place to draw inspiration from. His friend and collector, Cesar Hernandez, has described this phenomenon perfectly: while Antonio’s traditional subjects are his “prose,” his common subjects are his “poetry.”

Indeed, Antonio divorces these objects from their otherwise impertinent contexts and places them in a world of poetic wit. Here, he truly embodies what poet Pablo Neruda wrote in his Ode to Things: “I love all things, not just the grandest / also the infinitely small / thimbles, spurs, plates, and flower vases.” (Hannah Andrea Valiente)","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":null,"alias":null,"hp":700000,"bp":0.2016,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":700000,"userBid":34,"isPaid":0,"userId":34,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":19764,"reserve_price":700000,"hammer_price":841120,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":66836,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/203/236/lot/110.jpg","isFeatured":1},{"id":67148,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/203/236/lot/110b.jpg","isFeatured":0},{"id":67147,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/203/236/lot/110a.jpg","isFeatured":0}]},"increment":[450000,500000,550000,600000,650000,700000,750000,800000,900000,1000000,1100000,1200000,1300000,1400000,1500000,1600000,1700000,1800000,1900000,2000000,2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":109,"next":111,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
