While the self-taught artist may have struggled throughout his career, his legacy has transcended the conflicts that shaped it.

Aguinaldo’s artistic journey was defined by struggle. During his early developmental years, he showed innate artistic talent that would become a lifelong pursuit. As the eldest heir to the Aguinaldo family business, he was expected to prioritize commerce over artistry. In an attempt to contain his free artistic spirit, Lee was sent to military academy. Instead of deterring him as one would expect, the experience became a golden opportunity for Lee to further immerse himself in art. The distance gave him a level of freedom to sketch, visit museums, and meet an unlikely mentorship by the academy’s janitor.

His self-education in the arts was a process of learning through reverse—beginning with the contemporary and ending with the masters. His style was an amalgam of influences: from exposure to Dutch Baroque painters such as Rembrandt, Abstract Expressionist works of Jackson Pollock, to Dada and Pop Art. Post-military school, his intellectual conversations with contemporaries like Fernando Zobel further enriched his practice. It was a decades-long cycle of not only learning and understanding, but, more so, of trial, error, and innovation. For Lee, acrylics offered a sense of limitless innovation.

In Painting No. 2, gradients of orange and yellow peek from the base of the canvas against a stark white void. The transition is harmonious; the brushwork is clean—it feels mechanical yet ethereal. The composition evokes the first breath of dawn. There is no celestial sun to serve as a focal point–-only a quiet diffusion of light. Much like Lee Aguinaldo, the light is a presence that endures and permeates the void.
