She had been, at that time, quite often sick. “Imagining my mother as a child seemed so surreal,” she said. “The dress made me ‘experience’ the childhood she once had. I felt that I needed to preserve that memory.”\n<br><br> \nThat quiet intimacy of inanimate objects shines through this 2023 Gregorio’s Barong. Depicting a wrinkled, old barong or a long-sleeved national dress of the Philippines, Cruz writes a couple of notes in the margins of the canvas detailing the life of her grandfather, or lolo Gregorio. She writes of his unfulfilled priesthood dreams, the special occasions where he wore this special barong, and other ephemeral details of his life. <br><br> \nMemories and historical significance permeate her works, and yet, though nostalgia is central in her oeuvre, her pieces are still unquestionably and inarguably contemporary. As her Mind Set Art Center’s artist biography writes, “By reinterpreting the meaning of the clothes once worn by her mother and aunts, the artist manages to process the relation between history and the people living through it, and the clothes serve as the medium through which she explores the continuation of life. Her painting process is like a person’s memory.
