An artist from the second generation of Neo-Realists, alongside her contemporaries including Malang, Mario Parial, and Angelito Antonio, Belleza’s works are a vivid explosion of vibrant colors and intricate details, her fascination with the folk genre translating into scenes of the pastoral Philippines. <br><br> This particular Belleza work echoes that horror vacui that permeates many of her pieces. Depicting a family of four, Belleza’s iconic figures sit in front of what could have been their flower shop. Husband and wife sit upon a bench, with the father holding his prized rooster and the mother holding her youngest on her lap. Behind them, their eldest son is playing with his toy. Flowers surround the family, no square inch of canvas unused. <br><br> Belleza’s vivid colors shine through in this work. The primary colors red, blue, and yellow dominate the canvas, with daubs of pink and green serving as secondary colors. However, rather than muddy the work, this explosion of colors perfectly embodies the crowded and noisy market scene. The Filipino people as a whole are rather maximalist in their lifestyle, and this maximalism is the central tenet of Belleza’s works. Beauty and survival work hand-in-hand, strong and unflappable as her characters live their everyday lives.
