The Second World War was in full swing, and the Japanese Imperial Army had invaded the town, turning it into a garrison. The Army had used the church’s shrine as an arsenal, and it was the quick thinking of the chief sacristan, Procopio Ángeles, that perhaps saved a religious statue of the Virgin Mary. Wrapping Our Lady of Antipolo in a thick woolen blanket, Ángeles placed it in an empty petrol drum, which he then buried in a nearby kitchen. <br><br> However, the escalating fighting between the Allied and the Axis forces drove the citizens of Antipolo to flee the town. Known as the “Paglikas sa Colaique” (translating to ‘Escape to Colaique’), the people exhumed the buried Marian statue on 19 February 1945 and brought it to Sitio Colaique, a secluded hilly area in what is Brgy. San Roque today. From there, the Virgin Mary was spirited away to Brgy. Santolan in Pasig, then to the town center of Pasig itself. The statue eventually found its way to the Ocampo-Santiago family residence, courtesy of Rosario Alejandro, daughter of Pablo Ocampo, before spending the rest of the Second World War inside the Quiapo Church. <br><br> Manuel Unidad’s Escape of Virgin of Antipolo depicts the historical event of February 1945. While the Virgin of Antipolo was translated back to its home church in October of the same year, the residents continue to revere this religious icon. Also known as Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, her devotees believe that Our Lady of Antipolo has performed a miracle that helped provide safe passage for the hundreds of townsfolk nearly a century ago.
