A period of exploration for the artist, he has, in his own words, “developed an insatiable illusionism,” creating works of personal spontaneity that explored different approaches to painting and the material language of art.

By then, Cruz had embarked on a sweep of iconoclasm against classical paintings and sculpture. He wields paint brushes and tubes as though a child’s crayon, cutting through the previously “sacred” canvas with reckless abandon. Through crisscrossing layers of paint, it seems as though his oeuvre consists of controlled vandalism and nothing more.

However, a deeper look at the background offers a much appreciated level of understanding. Under overwhelming vandalistic destruction is another painting, one that copies the works of Flemish and Renaissance masters. Cruz calls them “backgrounds” rather than finished products, relegating pieces that are often masterpieces in their own right to mere elements in his works.

“Thus,” Ito writes, “the creation of representation and subject matter are not the end goals of art, but merely constitute one facet of artistic production and experience.” Give Me Some Bones is an exemplary sample of Cruz’s exact destruction. He destroys not only the background but also the frame upon which the painting is mounted, as there is a notable chunk of the piece cut out of the side of the canvas. The background is nigh unrecognizable, save for the soft dark green of the grass reserved at the rising or the setting of the sun.

The continuous tension between destruction and creation is evident in the works of Cruz. Hervé Lancelin calls this particular gesture “aggressive archeology” in his ArtCritic piece “Jigger Cruz: Cover, erase, be born.”

“Each of his canvases preserves the trace of the original image, sometimes visible through transparency, sometimes completely buried,” he writes.

“This pictorial stratigraphy functions as a metaphor for Philippine colonial history: Western references remain present, unavoidable, but no longer dictate the ultimate meaning of the work. This is not about a clean slate but a violent, assumed, and jubilant rewriting.”

Cruz’s works force us to rethink the dynamics between the center and periphery in globalized contemporary art. As Benny Nemerofsky Ramsay wrote in “A Mark from the Periphery”: “Cruz’s mark making is therefore not random and gratuitous, but rather a challenge to the painting’s neutrality, a questioning of its assumed innocence…His peripheral painting moves from outside the frame onto the canvas in order to interrupt and transform dominant art-historical discourse.” (Hannah Andrea Valiente)","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":null,"alias":null,"hp":3400000,"bp":0.2016,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":3400000,"userBid":34,"isPaid":0,"userId":34,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":19161,"reserve_price":0,"hammer_price":4085440,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":66745,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/203/236/lot/19.jpg","isFeatured":1},{"id":66943,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/203/236/lot/19a.jpg","isFeatured":0}]},"increment":[2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":18,"next":20,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
