A favored topic of Ang’s, the artist comes back again and again to depict the poignant narrative told through a fisherman’s visual elements.

This particular Fisherman piece depicts the titular worker hauling a huge catch from his net. He leans backwards, feet planted firmly in the ground as he dragged the net with a masterful precision that shows his knowledge and familiarity with his work.

At its core, Ang’s Fishermen, like many of his works on the same topic, is a moving social commentary of a marginalized sector of society. An archipelagic country, the Philippines is rife with fishermen whose daily sustenance depends heavily on their daily catch. Ang’s canvases capture the pulse of Philippine society, their vivid and sharp images serving as a visual metaphor of a country in constant flux throughout its history.
