Through layers of paint, thread, and even printed fabric, Napay transports the viewer to a wilder, freer place to rest and reflect.<br/><br/> Colorful scenes teeming with flora put Napay’s ingenuity and technical skill on full display. The titles of his solo exhibitions in 2015, Sanctuary at the Ateneo Art Gallery and Sacred Thread at Art Stage Singapore, express the solace offered by his forests and his reverence for his chosen medium. In the same year, he won the “Lorenzo il Magnifico” International Award for Textile Art at the 10th Florence Biennale.<br/><br/> Pieces Napay exhibited at the Palazzo Mora during the 57th, 58th, and 60th Venice Biennale illustrate musings on human life, relationships, and belonging through his recurring imagery of trees, vines, and nests. In the quadriptych “Love” (2017), for instance, Napay employed paint, machine sewing, and hand embroidery to depict the upper section of a vibrant jungle.<br/><br/> This sizable work from 2016 similarly places the viewer in front of a tree, above ground, in a dense forest. The curving, crisscrossing lines of the foliage lend a sense of motion and convey the complex, interdependent reality of the ecosystem, in which everything is connected. Firmly anchored between the branches, the nest in the center offers refuge. In the midst of the jumble, a creature has made a home. <br/><br/> The multicolored nest and surrounding web contrast the greens and browns that dominate the canvas; the red and blue threads call to mind veins and arteries. This constructed abode is, in truth, a part of the forest—perhaps even its beating heart. Nonetheless, the nest’s emptiness and the artwork’s limited field of vision ultimately pose more questions than answers. Napay leaves the viewer to ponder the mysteries of the forest.
