As chairperson of the Philippine First Educators’ Group Delegation, Joya flew to China to present a letter of invitation to the Art Society of Peking for the Southeast Asian Regional Artists Conference, of which he was also the secretary-general.

This 16-day trip to the People’s Republic of China provided Joya ample spare time to travel within the country. He visited iconic landmarks like the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, and many other historical places. He had also visited the major cities of Beijing, Nanjing, Canton, Shanghai, and Hangzhou, the latter of which was the inspiration for the lot in hand.

Boat Ride to Hangchow, dated 28 December 1972, likely depicts Hangchou’s famed West Lake, a lake so majestic it has inspired many painters and poets since the 9th century. West Lake was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011 for influencing garden designs in China, Korea, and Japan.

Joya’s China trip becomes fundamental in several of his later works. “In fact, I had just left the border when I thought of going back. That’s how much I liked the place,” Joya said in a 12 July 1972 Manila Bulletin interview. However, despite the foreign subject matter, Boat Ride to Hangchow is a resplendent articulation of the Filipino visual language, reminiscent of the dynamic rhythm of tthe Philippine indigenous art.
