He was known as Paris, France’s first bishop, who was arrested and beheaded during the Roman persecution. Legends say that after his beheading, San Dioniso, guided by the angels, picked up his decapitated head and walked several miles while preaching, and eventually succumbed to death upon reaching his diocese, the current site of the Basilica of Saint-Denis. Later, he was proclaimed the city’s patron saint. In 1958, Pope Pius V added the feast of San Dionisio to the Roman Calendar.

Over the years, San Dionisio’s devotees multiplied. In the Philippines, particularly in Parañaque, a local chapel was built in his honor, where a centuries-old wooden statue of the headless saint holding his decapitated head was displayed. Every year, devotees gather at San Dionisio Chapel, popularly known as Tata Dune, to commemorate the saint. Feast day celebrations begin with a Eucharistic mass in the morning, followed by a solemn procession that draws community participation and reverence.

In this 1977 painting, Antonio Austria depicted the procession celebrating Tata Dune. Processions are a common sight at Filipino festivals, symbolizing the community’s faith and unity. Any other activities come to a halt as people gather along the streets to participate and show respect to the event. A champion of presenting Filipino culture and traditions, Austria’s Prosisyon truly embodies the Filipino religious and communal spirits.
