As the people gather around the courtside, various games and events are happening on the court — gymnasts tumble across the stage, jumping and walking and displaying feats of incredible flexibility and strength, all the while a strongman balances a group of people on his head and a magician holds a wand in her hand.

“I derive inspiration from our colorful cultural past to try to create our very own Philippine contemporary art,” Austria says, as quoted by the second part of Artes De Las Filipinas’s ‘Old Master of the Visual Arts Antonio Austria’ article.

Indeed, Austria’s Palabas is an intimate exploration of the depths of cultural identity, heritage, and narratives. Through his robust and unpretentious figurations, he portrays urban subjects like the jeepney, sari-sari store, carinderias, street vendors, family life, and religious practices, among many others, creating an oeuvre that is wholly and truly Filipino.
