Often working within the vein of Social Realism, his earlier works feature highly symbolic works that feature sociopolitical topics. However, his later works eventually veered into the realm of allegory.

Though some of his works straddle between the real and the surreal, Garibay is drawn to the ordinary lives of ordinary people. “It is the richness of the poor that I am drawn to and which I am part of that I want to impart in my art,” he had once said.

Indeed, it is this focus on the everyday Filipino that permeates this place. With the background only in shades of red and black, the focus is on the tangle of ochre-colored bodies, their faceless features guaranteeing the viewer’s audience on one thing only. Through Garibay’s unique visual language, he effectively produces an intimate and nuanced work that, through its relative blankness, serves as a perfectly optimal jumping point to portray the inherently revolutionary act of love itself.
