Years of painstakingly working on detailed needlepoint elements in her paintings took their toll on Nena’s eyesight. A detached retina was reportedly a cause of discomfort for her, and by the mid-1980s, she had undergone an eye operation. As such, the pointillism in her works slowly waned, the elements growing bigger and bigger to support her weakening sight.

Nena’s personal papers also revealed her thoughts on her everyday life, brief as they may have been. Most of her documents, collected after her death by her family, are mostly effects regarding her professional career: brief business letters, exhibition catalogues, news clippings of reviews, and folders of notes titled “researches” and “lectures.”

However, a mini-diary provides a laconic view of Nena’s personal life. No bigger than the palm of one’s hand, entries dating from 1 January to 30 September 1992 are found, all written in 20 words or fewer. It is mostly about the minute details of her day-to-day life — visits to the Malraux Library, books read, doctor’s appointments, and such. A number of these entries end with professions of faith, as befits a devout Jehovah’s Witness.

These material conditions of Nena’s life make up the creation of her 1993 Sing, All You Who Are Upright in Heart. Her deteriorating eyesight forced her to abandon the pointillistic dots that defined her works, leading her to create more figurative pieces. Her devotion shines through, too: as a pious Christian, praise and worship through music is perhaps one of the best-known forms of veneration. As such, Sing, All You Who Are Upright in Heart is poetic in its melancholy – visceral, emphatic, and contemplative, as it embodies Saguil’s pensive 1990s.
