Creating a fragmented yet layered art piece that allows multiple images and spaces to coexist.

Created around 1967, Manansala highlights the subtle reality of everyday life by presenting a populated image of items found in a household—foods (fish and leaf vegetables), dining utensils, plates, bowls, pans, lamps all organized and displayed together like visual puzzle pieces filling in the gaps that make up the daily rhythms of Filipino life.

The color itself plays a crucial role in the masterpiece. The warm earth tones dominate the pieces and provide a sense of domesticity, simplicity, and humility, as the figures are given life through colors that resemble the material textures of wood and clay. Humble and familiar, Manansala perfectly reflects how the ordinary kitchen items found in the house are often intertwined, filling in the gaps. Hinting at the inseparability of people and their environment, as well as reflecting a grander image that revolves around evoking the textures of everyday life in the mid-20th-century Philippines.
