Nº cat. 66-48, ill. 337, p. 336.","write_up":"The 1960s proved to be a pivotal decade for abstractionist Fernando Zóbel. After a fruitful period of purely black-and-white works, Zóbel had felt the need for color again, starting in 1963 when sienna, tans, ochres, and grays slowly and tentatively crept back into his work. <br/> <br/> It was also within the same decade that his plans for Museo de Arte Abstracto Español were actualized. Beginning his search for a more permanent place to house his collection in 1963, Zóbel had narrowed down his choices to Cuenca. With the help of artist and Cuenca native Gustavo Torner, the Casas Colgadas was suggested to be the site for his collection. Upon Mayor Rodrigo Lozano de la Fuente’s assistance, work immediately began afterward. By the summer of ‘64, the place became a sanctuary for painters, ushering in a thriving artist’s community of sorts by the time the museum officially opened on 30 June 1966. <br/> <br/> La Raya, dated November 1966, was created five months post-opening of Museo de Arte Abstracto Español, and that wave of inspiration and fresh start shines through. Zóbel had painted little while the works at the museum were going on, hanging but only two. However, the reprieve afforded by the fulfillment of the museum as well as the bustling community it had fostered gave Zóbel a brand new perspective. <br/> <br/>Translating to The Line, La Raya, in its barest necessity, echoes the line and movement that permeated an earlier period of his. Rafael Pérez-Madero would describe the theme Zóbel employed as “movement expressed metaphorically through the use of line. The movement of leaves, blades of grass, trees, birds, people; movement observed, sensed, never imitated, but, I hope, translated.” <br/> <br/>However, in contrast to its stark black and white palette, a sense of fresh start blooms through the shades of sienna and tan that occupy the canvas. Here, he polished and developed the beginnings of a brand new chapter, wherein he began to look at nature as a theme and as a pretext. He honed this perspective, his landscapes turning increasingly imaginary as he sifted through them again and again until a marvelous, unreal space bloomed from its very ashes. <br/> <br/>Fernando Zóbel’s La Raya, like a phoenix, is the shedding of the skin to present the new chapter of his 1960s. The final result is an unreal, lyrical, and metaphorical picture achieved through colors and themes, giving entrance to a new wave of Zóbel masterpieces.
