Lopez became one of the most prominent artists in the Mabini Art Movement—a group of artists around Mabini St. in Ermita, Manila—known for its accessible, realistic, and commercially available paintings that appealed to local and tourist markets. An excellent portraitist in his own right, he learned the art early from his grandfather, Eugenio Lopez, a provincial artist who specialized in portraiture. He also worked retouching photographs in a studio, which enhanced his eye for photographic realism in portrait painting, creating notable and magnificent works that the artist was known for. His extreme attention to facial detail and likeness resulted in numerous beautiful artworks, including paintings of important figures such as Manuel L. Quezon and Jose Rizal.
