Just like many art forms, cartooning—one way or another—reflects the artist’s perspective on the topic he creates.

Lauro “Larry” Alcala was one of the big names in the Philippine cartooning industry. He was an editorial cartoonist, an illustrator, and an instructor to many aspiring artists. He created numerous editorial cartoons and comic strips for different magazines and comic books, many of which served as commentaries on Philippine society. One of his earliest and most notable comics, Kalabog en Bosyo, was adapted into a 1957 movie produced by Sampaguita Pictures. With his insightful and humorous illustrations and substantial contributions to Philippine art, Larry Alcala was posthumously and well-deservedly named a National Artist for Visual Arts in 2018.
