During the 1960s, Luz began working with collages, characterized by sticking cut pieces of paper to a surface to create an image, then overlaying them with acrylic paint. This method gives his paintings a physical texture. Kyoto I belongs to his Kyoto series, a collection of acrylic collage on paper or canvas created between 2000 and 2014. Luz uses squares and rectangles to copy traditional Japanese roofs and temples, highlighting his love for clean, geometric shapes inspired by his travels. Moreover, this piece showcases his spatial intelligence and discipline in aesthetic restraint; despite the minimalist nature of his canvases, his masterful employment of forms and colors fills the void left by bare spaces.
