His constant exploration of themes about human psychology, memory, dreams, and symbolism made him one of the pioneers of Philippine modern art. His featured masterpiece, A Bird in Hand is Worth Two in the Bush, presents an enigmatic arrangement of fragmented human figures—each depicting different parts of the nude female body — as the figure of a pregnant woman takes center stage. The juxtaposition of pregnancy with the isolated body parts oscillates one’s attention between the sensuality to themes of creation, reproduction and vulnerability with the physical realities of womanhood, establishing the female body as a symbolic vessel of life and identity.
