He was a pioneer of the Modernism movement in the country, challenging traditional artistic norms and inspiring generations of Filipino artists to explore new mediums and artistic expressions. While most of Edades’ paintings featured dark images of roughly constructed figures burdened by labor, he also produced a substantial number of portraits and landscapes, such as this 1978 work. This untitled oil painting highlighted the maestro’s enduring artistic vision, depicting reality including its dark, textured facets, and demonstrating his dedication to his craft, staying true to his art even during the twilight years of his life.
