Throughout his art career, Puruganan was noted for his sense of nationalism, with several of his pieces noted and even disqualified in the 1944 Second National Art Contest for Japanese antagonism.

Indeed, that nationalism in this piece, albeit subtly. Under the vivid sunlight, the Filipino walks barefoot and straight-backed into the future. He holds a sickle in one hand and a hat in the other; on his hip is a scabbard for a bolo. Here, Puruganan portrays the Filipinos walking triumphantly into the future, the tools to shape their tomorrow already in their hands.
