Done in his cubistic art style, visions of mother and child dominate his canvases, as do women in the marketplace, in the fields, and in the countryside, among others. This particular Salita piece features his recognizable faceless subject as she kneels to rearrange flowers. Her dark hair peeks out from behind her white bandana, similar to the ones worn by working women in the fields. Seemingly simplistic, Salita’s works nevertheless preserve a pocket of the rural Philippines that many feel nostalgic for, carrying within them a longing for the Philippines long past.
