While he was most renowned for his abstract paintings, he was first an artist with a strong focus on drawing. “Drawing has always been my most direct form of connecting to the universe around me,” Joya once shared. In the Philippines, Joya often visited far-flung places to conduct plein air sketching, documenting the places, people, and scenes unfolding before him. This practice extended to his overseas sojourns, occasionally leaving the confines of his lodgings to experience the world, sketch buildings and people, and, at the same time, draw inspiration for his subsequent works. This charcoal on paper work offers a glimpse of the titular Palace of Justice in Rome; the edifice exudes a commanding presence despite the artist’s hurried, rough sketching.
