With the Everyman as his primary subject, he does not shy away from the nebulous grotesqueness of the tortured souls — indeed, he relishes it, disfiguring the familiar until the inner machinations of one’s emotions manifest through their physical appearance, with the long faces and their downturned eyes. In this particular 1981 work, Onib utilizes a dark color palette leaning on blues, purples, and greens that further emphasize the desolation this man feels. Here, Onib’s man is embroiled in his own convoluted emotional struggle, his anguish made physical through the artist’s unique and now-beloved style.
