Combining the words “nanay” (mother) and “tatay” (father), Garibay’s titular “natay” is portrayed as almost completely a woman, except for one distinctly masculine feature: her mustache. She holds her son close to her chest, arms wrapped around his small body. With her standing as both her child’s mother and father, one is left to wonder what becomes of her husband and the circumstances that led to her dual role. Whatever the reason may be, Natay is rife with Garibay’s signature sociopolitical commentary, woven tightly in the portrait of a mother and child.
