The term’ gaya’ means ‘to copy’ while ‘puto maya’ is a sweet, glutinous rice cake delicacy of the Visayas and Mindanao regions, and was only added to create a rhyme. In this painting, however, the artist Alfredo Aquilizan replaced ‘gaya gaya’ with ‘sama sama,’ which means ‘together.’ Aquilizan portrayed a room full of people crowding around a glowing object, presumably gold, which was also the only thing illuminating the darkened piece. Together, people are clamoring, clawing, and climbing their way to reach the treasure first, without a care in the world. Sad but true, this shows one of humanity’s negative traits: everyone turns a blind eye, and everything becomes a solo, selfish game once presented with something that will greatly benefit them.
