Arsenio Manuel (1909  - 2003)","exhibited":null,"literature":null,"write_up":"The Other Rizal</br></br>by LISA GUERRERO NAKPIL<br/><br/>Paciano Mercado y Alonso Realonda was the man who bestowed the name ‘Rizal’ to his younger brother in 1872 to protect him from the reign of terror unleashed by the Cavite Mutiny and to spare him from his own indirect association with the ill-fated martyr Padre Burgos.<br/><br/>It was also Paciano who masterminded Jose’s escape to Spain and who dutifully sent him his allowance to study and travel all over Europe.<br><br>But he was far more than that to our national hero.<br/><br/>Rizal would write on the eve of his execution to Paciano,<br/><br/>“It has been four and a half years that we have not seen or spoken or written to each other (the time that Rizal was in exile in Dapitan), not, I believe, of any lack of affection on my part or on yours, but because knowing each other so well we did not need to speak to understand each other.<br/><br/>“Now that I am to die, it is to you that I write last to tell you how sorry I am to leave you alone in life, bearing all the burden of the family and our aged parents.<br/><br/>“I think of how you have worked to give me a career; I have tried not to waste your time. My brother, if the fruit<br/><br/>has been bitter, it has not been my fault but the fault of circumstance. I know you have suffered a lot of my sake; I am sorry.”<br/><br/>—- Epistolario Rizalino, IV, 296.<br/><br/>Paciano could not spare Rizal, however, from his trial and execution — although Paciano was arrested and brutally tortured for days as the Spanish authorities searched desperately for incriminating testimony against Jose. Paciano withstood the worst of the torments and was released only when he had lost consciousness and served no further purpose.<br/><br/>This photograph, known as a Recuerdo de Patay (or Remembrance of the Dead) is a pictorial death mask of this patriot and revolutionary general. Paciano would take up the name Rizal himself after his brother’s execution, signing himself Paciano Mercado Rizal. He would fight under the command of General Emilio Aguinaldo, operating in the Rizal family’s homeground of Laguna and Pasig<br/><br/>E. Arsenio Manuel’s notes (made on a manual typewriter with a few typographical errors) were made in 1996 when he would have been 87. It records a meeting with either Dr. Bantug, who had married into Rizal family, or Jose P. Santos, the son of noted archivist Epifanio de los Santos. The location of the meeting was at the U.P.
