Based on the bibliographical information on the frontispiece, a special edition of only 50 copies in satin paper was printed.

On December 10, 1907, Wenceslao Retana spoke before the Centre Nacionalista Republicà (Nationalist Republican Center), a Spanish political party that was founded in Barcelona in 1906 and expounded liberal-republican politics and campaigned for Catalan autonomy as well as a new Spanish republic.

Retana’s speech touched on the life and writings of Dr. José Rizal, a well-researched biography that he had published that same year. It was a speech that the Catalan writer Joaquim Cases Carbo praised as a “magnificent lecture” that was well-applauded. The party eventually requested for a copy of the speech to which Retana obliged with some extracts translated into Catalan. It was published in 1910<

with the title, Rizal, Noticias biografiques (Rizal, Biographic Information) that Catbo would mention “as a small tribute of admiration to the great martyr of the Philippine Fatherland.” The 87-page monograph begins with Rizal’s early years and ends with his last poem (still untitled in this work) that eventually was given the title “Mi Ultimo Adios” and another poem “A Rizal” by Cecilio Apostol.

Wenceslao Emilio Retana y Gamboa will always be known in Philippine history as “the one-time adversary” of our national hero, José Rizal, but would later change his boorish attitude and become his defender and first biographer after the hero’s death. But aside from being Rizal’s biographer, he continued to publish works on Filipino arts, culture, history,and bibliographical information.

Born in 1862 in Boadilla del Monte, a small rural town west of Madrid, Retana was raised in a well-to-do family that afforded to give him a good education in the best universities in Madrid. He was recognized as a polymath—one who could easily digest and process knowledge in different areas. In his case, he became knowledgeable about the civil service, colonial administration, biographical and historical writing, bibliographical studies, political commentary, and, later, becoming a Filipinologist or a scholar specializing in studies about the Philippines.

In 1884, he was assigned as a civil servant under theSpanish colonial administration in the Philippines. He was first assigned in Batangas where the native culture of

the province aroused his interest. His interest about the country he was stationed in soon grew and it wasn’t long before he was writing about Philippine culture, history, and society. He amassed a large collection of Filipiniana that are being used by scholars today.

One of the works that Retana became famous for is the writing of the first full-length biography of José Rizal entitled Vida y Escritos del Dr. José Rizal (1907), a work that showed his change of attitude towards Rizal and the latter’s countrymen after writing anti-Filipino articles (especially against the Rizal family).

At the start of the American colonization of the Philippines,Retana had an abrupt change of attitude in his portrayal of the Philippines and its people. He came out with different studies on the Philippines that placed the country in which he had lived in a favorable light.

His last work on the Philippines was the Diccionario de filipinismos that he published in 1921. He died in Madrid,Spain in 1924.","lot_group":"BOOKS","lot_details_html":null,"alias":null,"hp":60000,"bp":0.2016,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":60000,"userBid":5930,"isPaid":0,"userId":34,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":25381,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":72096,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":68586,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/209/242/lot/111.jpg","isFeatured":1},{"id":68802,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/209/242/lot/111a.JPG","isFeatured":0}]},"increment":[70000,80000,90000,100000,110000,120000,130000,140000,150000,160000,170000,180000,190000,200000,220000,240000,260000,280000,300000,320000,340000,360000,380000,400000,450000,500000,550000,600000,650000,700000,750000,800000,900000,1000000,1100000,1200000,1300000,1400000,1500000,1600000,1700000,1800000,1900000,2000000,2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":110,"next":112,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
