Retana was the first of its kind to be published during the Spanish period. It later became the framework of books and textbooks on Philippine journalism from the American colonial period until today where part of the basic format for writing Philippine journalism history was to provide a list of the newspapers that appeared in the last century of Spanish colonialism in the country until the present times and write its description and history American historian and Philippine Library head librarian James Alexander Robertson noted the importance of El Periodismo Filipino on research in Spanish colonial history.<br/><br/>He described the book as containing “bibliographical matter, biographical notes and sketches, critical notes, and anecdotes.” The first 576 pages were printed in 1894 and the rest in January and February of 1895. The appendices consisted of essays by prominent Spanish and Filipino writers and bibliographers Jose T. Medina, Trinidad Pardo de Tavera, Pedro Lanzas, and an additional essay by Retana under his pen name Desegaños<br/><br/>Retana initially printed parts of this book as “Noticias para la historia de periodismo filipino” that came out as<br/><br/>a series of articles in the anti-Filipino reformist magazine, La Politica de España en Filipinas. He later edited this 1895 edition and added more entries until 1905 but noting that the new work has information that is “complete until 1898.” The bibliographical notes beyond the said year are just short descriptions of the periodical and the year of its publication.
