It was a friendship that lasted for a decade. Yet in those ten years, they only met once (in May, 1887 when Rizal spent a week with Blumentritt and his family in Leimeritz) but kept in touch through a correspondence that each one faithfully kept even though it would be weeks or even months before a letter would arrive.

They shared knowledge about a growing interest in Asia by Europe that was colonizing countries in the East. One was a Filipino, the other a Filipinologist. And ironically, Rizal—who was in Europe to study medicine—was learning about his country from a foreigner who had not even visited the Philippines but was an avid collector of books and documents about the country.

And after a time, their respect for each other grew from close friends; to being a mentor and a student; to a respectful relationship where their closeness meant Rizal calling his friend, “Mein Bruder.”

But the bond between the two men went beyond just being friendship or being colleagues in studying about the Philippines. It also meant defending each other in the fight against Spanish colonialism in the Philippines.

Blumentritt wrote and printed his El Noli me tangere (1889) two years after Rizal published his novel, Noli me tangere in 1887. The Noli exposed the evils of the Spanish colonization of the Philippines and was a major work that was written as part of the propaganda of the Filipino reformist movement in Spain. The book gained immediate attention by the Spanish colonial authorities and the Church and soon, it was condemned and ordered banned in the Philippines by the Church and the Spanish colonial government.

But in liberal Spain, the Noli became popular. Blumentritt was one of those who stood at the forefront of defending his friend. It led to the publication of his book-length critical analyses of the Noli me tangere and the challenge it faces in trying to initiate reforms in Spanish colonial Philippines.

The Blumentritt defense of the Noli was valued by Rizal for it was the judgement of his friend that he valued the most. And Blumentritt was sincere and at the same time, frank about his opinion of the Noli Me Tangere

Though he would view Rizal’s exposé of the abuses of the authorities—both the government and the Church as a necessity in the fight for reforms in the Philippines, Blumentritt also viewed his friend’s attacks on the Church as unjust as the ones who are at fault are “the ministers of religion who abused their position and dignity.”.

But the Noli defense didn’t end there. Blumentritt would continue to support his friend’s literary output by defending the second novel, El filibusterismo, and, prior to that, write the foreword for Rizal’s history book, the Annotations to Antonio de Morga’s Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas.

His defense gained Blumentritt enemies especially among the conservatives of Spain. But he held firm and remained steadfast with his friend. And before Rizal was executed in December 1896, Blumentritt was the only non-relative or family he would write a farewell letter. By then, the Austrian professor was already converted to the ideals of freedom for a country he had merely studied before. And his letters soon extended to Rizal’s fellow reformists and later, Filipinos fighting for independence.","lot_group":"BOOKS","lot_details_html":null,"alias":null,"hp":200000,"bp":0.2016,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":200000,"userBid":34,"isPaid":0,"userId":34,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":25383,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":240320,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":68588,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/209/242/lot/113.jpg","isFeatured":1},{"id":68800,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/209/242/lot/113a.JPG","isFeatured":0}]},"increment":[220000,240000,260000,280000,300000,320000,340000,360000,380000,400000,450000,500000,550000,600000,650000,700000,750000,800000,900000,1000000,1100000,1200000,1300000,1400000,1500000,1600000,1700000,1800000,1900000,2000000,2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":112,"next":114,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
