On the other side of the river is a parola or light house. Surrounding the nipa huts and the parola are lush tropical vegetation consisting of palm trees, anahaw, and banana leaves.

On the upper right field of the plaque is engraved the Coat of Arms of the Philippine Islands as a U.S. colony. Said coat of arms was adopted in 1905 and used until the inauguration of the Philippine Commonwealth in 1935. Designed by Gaillard Hunt of the U.S. State Department, the “new arms and great seal of the Philippine Islands consisted of thirteen alternating red-and-white stripes representing the Thirteen Colonies; a chief blue above, the honor color, and over them in an oval the arms of Manila with the castle of Spain and the sea lion prominently displayed. It also bore at its crest an American Eagle, the symbol of the United States, Beneath the shield was the scroll with the words ‘Philippine Islands.’”

The plaque was encased in a box covered in red velvet. The lid had an inner lining of silk in the form of a modified U.S. Stars and Stripes flag with 45 stars representing the number of states that had joined the U.S. by then. Proudly embossed in gold ink on the silk fabric amidst the field of stars is the plaque maker’s name: “Talleres de Plateria y Grabado de Crispulo Zamora, Manila.” The plaque rests on a raised surface lined in dark blue velvet with a tricolor ribbon that allows the plaque to be lifted. A paper sticker attached to the box’s back shows that it was crafted by I.R. Morales, a renowned printer, bookbinder, and stationer whose address in 1905 was (Calle) Crespo, 101. Calle Crespo later became a part of Calle R. Hidalgo while I.R. Morales later transferred to 308-310 Plaza Miranda, also in Quiapo, Manila, as per Manila City Directory 1921.

The plaque’s maker engraved his name on the lower left portion of the plaque thus: CRISPULO ZAMORA MANILA. Who was Crispulo Zamora? Born Crispulo de Guzman Zamora on 10 June 1871 in Sampaloc, Manila, he was one of the sons of the renowned silversmith and engraver, Mauricio Zamora, who came from a family of silversmiths, based in Santa Cruz and Quiapo, Manila. Another renowned silversmith and a Gobernadorcillo, Mariano Zamora (1830-before 1894), who married the Paterno heiress and astute businesswoman, Martina Molo Agustin Paterno, was likely Mauricio Zamora’s relative. Crispulo’s mother, Gervacia de Guzman (1842-1925), Severino Reyes’ inspiration for the main character of his book, Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang. She bore nine children–Ramon Martiniano (b. 1864),, Fernando (b. 1866), Cornelio (b. 1868), Tomas (b. 1870), Crispulo (1871-1922), Luis (b. 1874), Maria Carlota Flora (1876-1934), Cecilio (b. 1879(, and Rufino (b. 1881).

Crispulo established his own eponymously named atelier, Crispulo Zamora, Plateria y Grabado first at 30 Calle Crespo, Quiapo, Manila then at 351 Calle R. Hidalgo, Quiapo, Manila. Crispulo’s wife, Pelagia Mendoza de Gotianquin (1867-1939), whom Crispulo met as a fellow student at the Academia de Dibujo y Pintura, was not only a talented artist but also integrated her artistic skills into entrepreneurial ventures.

Plaques of appreciation of this quality, crafted by the Talleres de Plateria y Grabado de Crispulo Zamora and presented to U.S. presidents and other U.S. high government officials, are extremely rare. Two such plaques, plated in gold and silver, were those presented by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce & Industry (PCCI) in 1916, first to President Woodrow Wilson, now in the Princeton University Library Collection, and the second presented to the Hon. William Atkinson Jones, representative of the First District of Virginia to the U.S. Congress from 1890-1918. These Forged in Solid Silver, Wrapped in Stars Uncovering the Zamora Silver Relief Engraved on its face was the following inscription translated in English: plaques were given by the PCCI in gratitude for the passage of the Philippine Autonomy Act, more popularly known as the Jones Law, in 1916. Photos of these two plaques are in the Filipinas Heritage Library photo collection, though their labels were interchanged.
