Leaving the Philippines in the early 1900s, he first found himself on the soil of the United States in 1917, attending the San Francisco School of Fine Arts by day and working as an elevator boy by night, and then at the Philadelphia School of Fine Arts by 1925, before eventually crossing the ocean and arriving in France by late 1926. It was here in France that his art truly blossomed, as in the Parisian suburbs of Puteaux, he fell into the company of Camille Renault, his most important patron. With Renault comes the “Golden Section,” a collective of artists who often met up at Renault’s restaurant, Big Boy, to talk and exchange ideas.

This particular still-life echoes the still-life of French painter Paul Cézanne, whom Vitalis especially likes. Here, Vitalis’s penchant for depicting flowers in his still lifes is evident as he paints a simple bouquet of what could be poppy flowers in a vase. His vivid color scheme and unique brush strokes lend a remarkable depiction of a single snapshot of time, spinning an infinite web of stories that is brought to life using only inanimate objects.
