It is Olazo’s lifelong meditation on light and translucency, borne out of an original collagraph technique developed by the artist, wherein exceedingly fine layers overlap to create interesting patterns of relative density and transparency.

The Diaphanous series started in the 1960s, and this particular work, entitled Diaphanous #870, was among those created in the artist’s last few years. Dated 2012, these overlapping patterns are shaped in a circular manner, reminiscent of a rose’s petals. There is a certain rhythm in the tension and the breadth of the layers used, a manifest testament to Olazo’s mastery of this craft.

At the center of the Diaphanous series lies Olazo’s inquiry into how to make tangible the intangible — in particular, the tension between transparency and opacity. Light steps out of its supporting role and becomes the subject to illustrate itself. Diaphanous #870, like many in the Diaphanous series, perfectly encapsulates Olazo’s masterful transformation of light as structure.
