With his usual voluptuous, cartoon-like proportions, Obemio depicts a triad of women huddled together, each holding a pot or basket of food. It is reminiscent of many a Malang piece, where the artist’s overlapping planes and gem-colored palette combine to create an arresting vision of vendors captured mid-action.

Here, Obemio’s vendors echo the artist’s storybook-like quality, emphasizing a sense of whimsy and wonder that permeates fairytale books. Their features are more solemn than usual Obemio piece – a feature that is no doubt a remnant of his homage to Malang – but their figures are no less rotund, and his hopeful optimism no less diminished. His humorous, witty, and romantic works resonate with his Filipino audiences, whose inclinations align with Obemio’s particular brand of art philosophy.
